Family and friends have celebrated a major milestone in the Angela Butcher appeal to raise funds for cancer research.

Angela was just 30 when she was diagnosed with a rare strain of ovarian cancer, and along with parents Mike and Linda and brother Mark, was shocked to hear little was known about the strain.

The Biggleswade woman, who died in 2013 just six months after the discovery, started raising money for the Eve Appeal, which works towards achieving better detection and treatment of gynaecological cancers, and her family have continued the fundraising.

Now that fund has reached the £30,000 mark and a party was held at the St Andrew’s Rooms, Biggleswade, attended by 80 family members and friends, hosted by Linda, Mike and Mark.

The money being raised will go to the charity but will in turn be used to fund research in Europe into small cell ovarian cancer and the other small cell gynaecological cancers.

The Butchers have been inspired by the support they have received from oncologists, especially at University College Hospital (UCHL) in London.

At the party on Saturday, June 6, Mike made a moving speech about the fundraising and the generosity of supporters.

The evening was made even more special with the presentation of a plaque by Becca Braithwaite, partnerships officer for the Eve Appeal, commemorating Angela’s life and acknowledging family and friends’ generosity of raising £30,000. The plaque will be put on the wall in the laboratory at the UCHL where research will be carried out, due to start in the autumn.
